We are building increasingly powerful AI systems and we do not know how to make sure they do what we actually want. You'd think this would be a bigger deal.
Why hasn't AI solved ai alignment yet?
Nobody has a proven method for making sure a sufficiently capable AI system does what you intend. Current approaches work for current systems, mostly. They don't scale in any tested way to systems smarter than the people watching them. The labs ship faster than the safety research can keep up. We're building the plane in midair and hoping it holds together.
When will AI solve ai alignment?
Unclear, and that is the problem. If alignment gets solved, we'll probably only know after the fact. If it doesn't, same thing. The AI industry can't agree on a timeline or even a definition of 'solved,' which is not a great sign.
